Most of the Sri Lnkan dancing lovers known his just as Channa Wijewardhana. But very few know his full name, channa Udayaprema Wijewardhana. Channa was born in Burma and spent his childhood in United Kingdom. Through innovation and improvements in thythm he was able to put his own stamp to sri Lankan dancing.
Channa studied dancing from the one of Sri Lankan best dancer Panibaratha and successfully embellished this ancient art embodying improvements. today Channa Wijewardhana is one of the most famous and talented dancer as well as dancing master in Sri lanka.
He used to practice and learn dancing when he was in England at the Albert hall from the Sri Lankan performances. He also studied the most difficult Indian classial dancing style ' Kathakali'. Guru Wimal Nayananda was the Kathakali master of Channa Wijewardhana that time. Later Channa learnt low country dancing from Guru K.S.Fernando and upcountry dancing from Lansa Gurunnanse. When returne to Sri Lanka he went to Isipathana College for further School studies. Channa also a good rugger player of Issipathana College. Channa was the person who includes the aesthetic movements to the Sri lankan Sinhala dancing systems as there are no boundaries in the art of our dancing system. here is a nice video of this talented dancer when teach to his one of student . watch it here
Recently Channa and his dancing group participated for the 50th anniversary of Sri Lanka Insurance function. Even President Mahinda Rajapaksha also participated the ceremony and gave a speech about the Insurance company.
